no impact knockoff
following the good example of many posted by No Impact Man, i will be covering how i am channeling that "personal virtue" conservation in my daily life. i hope you will enjoy reading about the ways i am living more harmoniously with nature.
today's entry: clothes and transportation

Last night, I went to hang out with my girlfriend and her friends in the south bay. After dinner, people played board games and guitar hero. I sat around for a bit watching the turtles huddle under Jenny's heat lamp and then we decided to go to Goodwill. This being silicon valley where everyone makes $100k per year, it's easy to find tons of brand name, barely warn clothing.
I bought an old corporate t-shirt which I'll write on, and an almost-new pair of RL Polo jeans for $3 each. Lulu got some of Jenny's $3 Banana Republic finds too. What a great deal! I'm re-using clothes instead of supporting the manufacture and shipping of new ones. And I needed some new pants, so it's not like I'm hoarding and don't have room for it.
Today, as yesterday, I rode my (Lulu's) 3-speed beater bicycle to the BART (train) station and then rode the BART train to San Francisco. I really like the flow of bike-bart-walking around SF. It really helps me get exercise: stairmaster from the bowels of BART to the street level above (3 story's worth of stairs), not to mention traipsing over to Chinatown for early morning munchies.
I'm sad to report that to get to sunnyvale in any decent amount of time from oakland, I drove Lulu's VW Bug all the way there and back, though at a relatively conservative 60mph. If there were fast express trains that went all the way to San Jose, we'd take them instead. Do they exist? No, not yet. We still live in the era of cheap easy gasoline and oil, though those days are dementedly numbered.
Cheers!
